“Put me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon thy arm; for love is as strong as death, passion as hard as hell, the lamps thereof are fire and flames…”
Canticle of Canticles, VIII, 6
I feel a deep satisfaction in working with both terracotta and steel, because with both of them it is fire – however antithetically, hardening there, softening here, – that’s the true missing link in my whole artistic research. Fire is what interests me most, for it gives my work an almost erotic quality.
These are words by Spagnulo himself. It is no wonder, then, that the artist chose to draw inspiration from the short biblical poem for his last ‘environmental work’, especially conceived for this exhibition held at the Galleria Il Ponte, and aptly entitled Cantico.
