PentaChiari is an exhibition promoted on occasion of the tenth anniversary of Giuseppe Chiari’s death by five galleries – Armanda Gori Arte, Prato; Frittelli Arte Contemporanea, Florence; Galleria Il Ponte, Florence; Galleria Santo Ficara, Florence; Tornabuoni Arte, Florence – each with their own displays curated by Bruno Corà.
In these five exhibitions, Il Ponte presents a perhaps less well-known side to Chiari: his relationship with photography. Although not a photographer himself, Chiari often used this medium, especially in the 1970s. What he did, however, was acquire images not taken by himself, sign them, and hence transform them into his own work. Indeed, the date frequently seen on these photos corresponds to the moment when he acquired them, not when they were taken.
This exhibition comprises a collection of photographs of his performances, amongst which the snaps linked to one of his most famous creations, Gesti sul piano (from the mid 1960s). It is a topic he often returned to in the following years with elaborated photographs and a set of photos of a six-key piano, giving the title to these works, I sei scalini sono la musica, from the end of the 1990s.
